Hole of the Month

The Pit Golf Links - Pinehurst, North Carolina
8 Hole • Par 5

Designer Notes:

Number 8 gave us the opportunity to work with a landscape that had become a masterpiece in itself. After years of mining sand to build the Blue Ridge Parkway, the results were beautiful forms in the bottom of the quarry. From the elevated tee of some 30 feet, the entire hole is visible as it winds its way through sand left from years of neglect. Off the fairway is dead. If you get behind the dunes, you can only pitch out and take your medicine. The small green is reachable in two shots, but only after a properly placed tee shot. In creating The Pit we tried to leave as much intact as possible. As I've said before, you can pile up dirt, but you can't pop-up 50 year old pine trees in the middle of a mound. If dirt were used to create a similar landscape, it would require 3,000,000 cubic yards. This relatively short par 5 has been ranked one of the best 50 holes open to the public by Golf Magazine.
