John Darrah took the road less traveled from the typical golf course architect. Born in Chicago, he received a degree in engineering from Crane College. Following his education, John worked as an engineer for a coal firm in Wyoming, eventually moving back to Illinois to work for Union Fuel Company. He later resigned from this industry due to poor health and became a greenkeeper at Beverly Country Club in Chicago, where he remained for several years.
John’s time as a golf course architect began after accepting a position at Olympia Fields Country Club. He helped restore the courses after being abandoned during the war. After completing this project, John went on to form his own golf course construction business. His career consisted of rebuilding and renovating courses throughout the Chicago-area to designing and building his own original designs.
John was elected into ASGCA as a new member in 1966 and would be a member until his death in 1972.
