Erin Hills includes tight fine fescue fairways, rugged and natural eroded bunkers, and undulating greens. Built on a fast-draining glacial fill, the course will promote the firm playing conditions desired by the USGA. In addition, the total yardage of the course can be varied between 5,000 and 8,000 yards from over 100 tee locations.
The holes at Erin Hills are designed to play from the tops of dunes down into valleys, making most holes spectacular views for spectators. The architects also left ample space in the middle of the course for a large commercial and hospitality area. Sprawling over 300 acres, Erin Hills may have space to accommodate more fans than any venue in U.S. Open history.
Fry said, “It is truly an honor to have our golf course selected to host the U.S. Open, for only a few times in history has a course been selected while the architect was still living.” Hurdzan also commented, “Erin Hills is a culmination of my over 50 years of being around and involved in golf course design.”
