In Golf Course Industry magazine, Jeffrey Brauer, ASGCA shared some of his thoughts on making golf course fairways wider. He encouraged course owners and superintendents to think about the course architect’s original design for the fairways and pointed out that longer holes generally need wider fairways.

In the article, Brauer said that fairway bunkers are most likely intended to create strategy on a course, and if the fairways have crept inside the bunkers, taking the fairway edges back out brings the fairways into play again and makes the bunkers relevant again.

Brauer also wrote that by slightly opening up the green front, a fairway can be made narrower, especially if the green is not set at a sharp angle.
