Brian Curley developed an appreciation for the game of golf and its architecture by playing, caddying, and working at courses in Pebble Beach, California, where he grew up. He graduated from the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo School of Architecture in 1982 and immediately began his career with Landmark Land Company, working on projects such as PGA West and alongside heralded architect Pete Dye on numerous courses. Brian headed the Landmark Golf Company Design Office until his 1997 buy-out, forming Schmidt-Curley with fellow ASGCA Member Lee Schmidt. Schmidt-Curley's philosophy is to push the envelope of design, keeping a fresh approach while avoiding redundant styles and balancing the owner's desires. The company promotes an attitude of staying on–course with nature, blending golfers' needs with the needs of the environment. Such site–adaptive courses balance classic golf architecture with contemporary technology. Brian brings experience and prominent involvement in master planning, designing, and construction of over 150 courses, with more than 30 years of experience. His portfolio includes one of the biggest brand–name design jobs in golf, the 22–course Mission Hills Golf Club, a world-renowned resort in China. His courses include many of the top designs in Asia and his courses have hosted numerous tournaments including the PGA Tour, European Tour, LPGA, Skins Game, and the World Cup of Golf.
