John Steidel graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture in 1971. In 1973, Steidel began his career as an associate with Robert Muir Graves, ASGCA. From there he went to serve as a senior associate at Thomson, Wolveridge, Fream & Assoc. In 1981, he decided to go independent as principal of John Steidel, Golf Course Architect. Following a successful career in the Pacific Northwest, Steidel was elected as an associate member of the ASGCA in 1995 and as a regular member in 1998.

In addition to his experience as an architect, Steidel has experience as a project manager and superintendent. He is also a member of the Northwest Turfgrass Association, National Golf Course Foundation, and USGA Greens Section.
