My father introduced me to golf at a young age, and along with my brothers I began caddying at the local Ross course in my early teens. After earning a Bachelors degree in Architecture, I apprenticed at a local Cleveland architecture firm. To be honest, while drafting architectural working drawings, I consistently day dreamed about golf courses. Eventually I realized my ideal career path should combine my passion for golf and architecture, so I changed course.
To enter the golf course design profession, I earned a Masters of Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley writing my thesis on: “The Evolution of the American Municipal Golf Course 1895 - 1940” while interning for Robert Muir Graves, Ltd. for two years. Wanting a deeper understanding of how golf courses evolve from the ground up, I then dedicated the next ten years of my career working golf course construction. I started as an assistant superintendent for large contractors, working with many of the top architects responsible for layout and staking, leading feature construction crews, and finished up rough shaping for the last two years.
In 2000, I joined PGA TOUR Design and Construction Services, Inc. progressing from Project Superintendent, Project Manager, Design Liaison, to Senior Director of Golf Course Design and Construction. With the TOUR, our focus was building, and renovating TPC course and consulting on tournament venues on various. In over 35 years I have worked on over 100 projects worldwide ranging from new course development, major renovations, competitive enhancements, practice facilities, tournament venue analysis, assessment and consultation.
I am proud to say that I have “never met a golf course that I didn’t like.” In my opinion, even the most troubled courses offer an opportunity for critical analysis, and improvement. Successful golf course design, reflects the old axiom “Form follows Function,” and layering as many factors as possible to develop an ideal solution is the key to the art. Although, for much of my career, I have focused on competitive courses for the world’s most skilled players on TOUR, I still rely on my caddy instincts, and am adept at making golf challenging, strategic, and playable for all skill levels.
