Worcester Polytechnic Institute, BSCE (1983)
Mark Mungeam received a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. After working summers in course maintenance, Mark began employment in golf course construction, learning the construction process while remaining responsible for day–to–day operation at several sites throughout the East. In 1987, Mark joined Cornish and Silva, Inc., and in 1995, he became a principal in Cornish, Silva, and Mungeam. Eleven years later, Mungeam Cornish Golf Design, Inc. was formed. When designing, Mark utilizes a site's natural characteristics to determine the style of the course. He and his partner believe frequent and extensive visits by the designer to a course during construction are critical to a successful project, as they allow the architect hands–on opportunities to improve the design or reduce work. The firm provides consistent personal service and budget awareness to each client, creating courses that balance the principles of visual appeal, golfer interest, and ease of maintenance. Mark has designed celebrated courses such as the Links at Hiawatha Landing outside Birmingham, New York; Cyprian Keyes Golf Course in Boylston, Massachusetts; and Owl's Nest Golf Course in Campton, New Hampshire. He may be best known for his sensitive renovation of Olympia Fields Country Club outside Chicago in preparation for both the 1997 U.S. Senior Open and 2003 U.S. Open.
