Tim’s interest in golf course architecture (GCA) stems from golfing during his formative years at many of the golden age Maine golf courses. His realization that GCA could be a career came with playing Sugarloaf Golf Course upon its opening in 1985 and the promotional frenzy associated with it.

Tim received his B.S. in Horticulture from The University of Maine in 1991 and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from The University of Massachusetts in 1999.  While at UMass, Tim worked as an apprentice to Geoffrey Cornish, FASGCA.  His Master’s thesis was the study of golf courses located on landfills. His research culminated in his site work at Sassamon Trace, a nine hole course in Natick, MA with four holes located on the landfill.

Gerrish has almost 30 years of experience in golf course architecture starting with an apprenticeship with Geoffrey Cornish, FASGCA, and continuing as a senior associate with Brian Silva, and Mark Mungeam, ASGCA with the firm Cornish, Silva, and Mungeam.  While with the firm he was responsible for the stunning and award-winning Butter Brook Golf Course and assisted on courses in the United States, Caribbean, and Thailand.  Other notable project involvement includes the award winning Black Creek In Chattanooga, TN, Black Rock in Hingham, MA  and the 2003 U.S. Open Renovation at Olympia Fields.  In 2007 he started a firm in Providence.

Much of Tim’s experience is with public golf, both municipal and daily fee.  It is his philosophy that a golf course should be designed with sustainability as the main factor, specifically lowering maintenance requirements, especially labor. While GCA strategy and aesthetics can be in the eye of the player, the difficulties to properly maintain a golf course in today’s economy are no surprise.

Tim is a registered landscape architect and occasionally works on clubhouse projects.  He is also a member of the Rhode Island, Connecticut, Cape, and New England Chapters of the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America.  Over the last fifteen years he has worked on numerous projects in New England, which includes renovation and restorations of courses originally laid out by Donald Ross, Wayne Stiles, Orrin Smith, Water Johnson, Geoffrey Cornish, and Brian Silva among others. He is currently principal of the firm Gerrish Golf + Landscape Architecture in Providence, Rhode Island. As the 317th member in the ASGCA history, he is the first member from Maine.
