W. Bruce Mathews was born in Hastings, Michigan. His journey to becoming a golf course architect started when he attended Michigan State University, receiving a degree in architecture. He then joined the golf design industry, as he was able to design his first golf course under the firm of Stiles and Van Kleek.
When the Great Depression hit, Matthews decided to close up shop on course construction and worked as a greenkeeper at Grand Ridge Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1960, he reentered the practice with his son, Jerry Mathews. In 1991, Matthews received a Distinguished Service Award from the GCSAA.
Matthews was elected into ASGCA as a member in 1970. He became a Fellow in 1981 and served as a member for 30 years until his death in 2000.
