Biography

While a majority of golf courses are conventional by size, Bill Amick believes more new courses should be less expensive and easier and faster to play. These advantages appeal to many current and potential golfers. Such courses include par 70 to 72, 9-hole, executive and par 3 courses. They attract a wide range of golfers, especially juniors, beginners of all ages, lesser-skilled golfers, shorter hitters and handicapped persons.

Added benefits to course developers and operators are reductions in the requirements for land, construction cost, annual maintenance, water for irrigation and environmental impact. These saving courses can be stand-alone courses, with a driving range or second courses.

Bill has designed more than 75 courses of all types in a dozen states and half a dozen countries. As a teenager, he was already a good player when he decided to become a golf course architect. He earned a BA degree and was a Graduate Assistant under a USGA Green Section Scholarship.

Bill gained valuable experience in the field by working for golf architects in Indianapolis and Atlanta. In 1959, he opened what is now the oldest golf course architectural practice in Florida.
