Jeffrey Brauer, ASGCA recently shared his thoughts on making golf courses vastly shorter in a recent post for Golf Course Industry Magazine. He proposes that most new designs should concentrate on building “companionship” courses rather than championship courses.
In addition to saving money, courses with maximum yardage of about 6800 yards would accommodate more than 97 percent of players, Brauer writes. He argues that too much time is devoted to designing around today’s long hitters when they represent about .07 percent of all players, rounds and shots.
