In the May/June edition of The BoardRoom Magazine, Robert McNeil, ASGCA Associate shared his thoughts on implementing a “Campaign for Khaki” at golf courses. He poses that such an approach will help educate course members on the budgetary and environmental effects of striving for unrealistic maintenance conditions.
In the article, McNeil offers several suggestions for clubs to consider as they respond to environmental challenges, including: establishing a sustainability committee; conducting a complete environmental analysis of the property; creating a sustainability program; and communicating the club’s commitment to the “Campaign for Khaki” to its local community.
McNeil also wrote about the efforts the United States Golf Association (USGA) and American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) have taken to encourage movement toward sound stewardship plans for courses. He recommended that players focus on playability and strategy rather than on what a course looks like, posing that it would be fun to play on greens that change naturally with the weather or time of year.
