Leslie was introduced to the game of golf by his father at a young age and began working in the golf industry in his early teens as a caddy. After earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree and working for two years in an architecture firm, Leslie realized his ideal career path would combine his passion for golf and architecture and went to graduate school to study Landscape Architecture to qualify for the profession. At the UC Berkeley, he interned for Robert Muir Graves, Ltd. ASGCA, and researched his masters thesis: “Evolution of the American Municipal Golf Course 1895 - 1940” detailing the public outcry for golf courses in the park and recreation movement. Wanting a deeper understanding of how golf courses evolve from the ground level, Leslie then dedicated the next ten years of his career working in golf course construction as a supervisor, layout man, and two years as a rough shaper. In 2000, Leslie joined PGA TOUR Design and Construction Services, Inc., and has served in many roles from site superintendent, project manager, design liaison, and Senior Director of Golf Course Design and Construction. Having worked on over 100 projects worldwide ranging from new course development, major renovations, competitive enhancements, Junior facilities, and tournament venue analysis, Leslie is proud to say that he has “never met a golf course he didn’t like.” Even the most troubled courses offer an opportunity for critical analysis and improvement. Golf course design, in his opinion, reflects the old axiom of “Form follows Function” and layering as many factors as possible to develop a solution is when built form becomes ideal. Although he has focused on competitive courses for the world’s most skilled players, Leslie still relies on his caddy instincts, and is adept at making golf holes and courses challenging, strategic, and playable for all skill levels.
