After more than a decade of playing golf on the PGA Tour, Tom Watson took on a new challenge - golf course design. He cut his teeth with Bob Jones, Jr. and Sandy Tatum on his first course: The Links at Spanish Bay for the Pebble Beach Company. Since that time, Watson has designed more than 12 courses worldwide, including The National Golf Club of Kansas City, the renovation of The Old Course at Ballybunion, Ireland, and Tom Watson Golf Course in Miyazaki, Japan. Tom Watson Design is currently working in China with two courses under contract or construction. When designing a course, there are a few concepts that are the focus of Tom Watson Design. First, drawing inspiration from the site, Tom believes the land will tell the designer what to do. Second, adding elements of whimsy makes each golfer remember a particular shot he or she faced. Third, each course must be user-friendly for all capabilities, so that it can achieve Tom's ultimate goal: making golfers want to replay his courses over and over again.
