In an interview recently posted on PGATour.com, world-renowned golf course architect Pete Dye, ASGCA (Fellow) speaks with Phil Richards for an article in Partners Magazine. Dye discusses a few of the theories he uses when designing, as well as some of the experiences that have shaped his career.
During the interview Dye shares his belief that the location of the green is probably the most prominent thing to consider when designing a hole, as opposed to starting from the tee and going from there. When designing, Dye also doesn’t overly concern himself with the past trend of making courses longer. According to Dye, he prefers to let the players enjoy the course as it is intended rather than worry about designing something that will please everyone. Dye says he designs and constructs courses he has a genuine interest in, and he has done so without regret.
