Five Associate members successfully completed all requirements and were elected Regular members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) at the organization’s recent 61st Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Ga.
Attaining regular membership in ASGCA were: Ty Butler (Charlotte, N.C.), George Clifton (Deland, Fla.), Paul Cowley (St. Simons Island, Ga.), Gil Hanse (Malvern, Pa.) and Brian Lussier (Morrisville, N.C.)
- Ty Butler — Vice President, Senior Golf Course Architect, Robert Trent Jones, II, Charlotte, N.C. office. Butler’s recent work includes Sunday River Golf Club, Newry, Maine and The Founders Club, Sarasota, Fla.
- George Clifton — Partner of Clifton, Ezell, & Clifton Golf Design Group, Deland, Fla. Clifton’s recent work includes Solivita Cypress Course, Poinciana, Fla. and Havana Country Club, The Villages, Fla. (Hemingway 9 and Kenya 9).
- Paul Cowley — Principal of Linksland, Inc., St. Simons Island, Ga. Cowley’s recent work includes Sanctuary Cove, Waverly, Ga. and The Patriot, Ninety Six, S.C.
- Gil Hanse — President of Hanse Golf Course Design, Malvern, Penn. Hanse’s recent work includes French Creek Golf Club, Elverson, Pa. and Boston Golf Club, Hingham, Mass.
- Brian Lussier — Golf Course Architect at Etd, PA, Morrisville, N.C. Lussier’s recent work includes Canyon Ridge, Rising Fawn, Ga. and Poplar Hill Golf Club, Farmville, Va.
Associate members in ASGCA have each designed at least five 18-hole golf courses and have practiced golf course architecture for a minimum of eight years, though the average ASGCA member has more than 20 years of experience and dozens of golf courses to his or her credit. Regular membership in ASGCA is earned after a member has been an Associate member in good standing for at least three years and has designed and seen through to opening two additional 18-hole golf courses.

Founded in 1946 by 14 leading architects, including Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the American Society of Golf Course Architects is a non-profit organization comprised of 180 golf course designers located throughout the United States and Canada. Members are actively involved in the design of new courses, the renovation of existing layouts, and issues affecting the future of the game.
