A busy fall is leading toward an active 2014 for ASGCA Past President Doug Carrick, highlighted by a new construction in China and several remodeling assignments.

As he noted in a recent Carrick Design Newsletter, “While the development of new golf course design projects remains slow, we have noticed a significant increase in golf course remodelling projects, which is hopefully a sign of better things to come for the golf industry.”

On the project front, Carrick remains active, including:

* A new ocean side links course in Dalian, China. The project is located in north – east China along the Dalian Peninsula on a “brown field” site overlooking the Yellow Sea. The project is to be developed as a major golf resort destination along with a small residential component.

The golf holes continually change direction incorporating a variety of long and short holes that are aligned to varying wind directions. The closing holes on each nine are stretched along the coastline in opposing directions, to a large double green situated in front of the grand hotel.

* Lebovic Golf Club, Aurora, Ontario

Construction work that began in June 2012 is progressing nicely with seeding completed on four holes. Flexterra mulch is being applied over all seeded areas to protect against erosion. Shaping, drainage and irrigation work will continue with the completion of seeding on the remaining holes to be completed next spring. The course is scheduled to open in 2015.

* Friday Harbour Resort, Lake Simcoe Ontario

Construction is progressing well with more than 500,000 cubic meters of earth moved to date. The golf course is designed to accommodate more than 1.8 million cubic meters of earth from the marina excavation. Rough shaping of the course features will continue through next year with drainage, irrigation, greens construction and seeding planned for the summer of 2015. The golf course is scheduled to be completed in 2016.

* Westmount Golf & Country Club

Work has begun on the largest component of the long range master plan, which included the re-construction of the 11th & 12th greens and complete remodelling of all the bunkers on the golf course. The focus has been on restoring the golf course to a design character that is consistent with Stanley Thompson’s design philosophy and style. Carrick Design has provided design services to the Westmount Golf & Country Club, located in Kitchener, Ontario, since 2003.

* Burlington Golf & Country Club

Work began in September on the remodelling of all bunkers and cart paths along with the construction of  5 new tees that will be completed in two stages, with the final phases of work to be completed in the fall of 2014. Burlington is another inspiring Stanley Thompson design. Carrick Design has provided design services to Burlington Golf & Country Club, located in Burlington, Ontario, since 2004.

* Thornhill Golf & Country Club

Remodelling of the 15th hole at Thornhill Golf & CC was completed in early November. The work involved the relocation and re-construction of the green and surrounding bunkers, re-construction of the tees, re-contouring of the fairway along with the addition of two fairway bunkers. Thornhill is also a Stanley Thompson designed course, where Byron Nelson won his historic 11th tournament in a row at the 1945 Canadian Open. Carrick Design has provided design services to Thornhill Golf & Country Club, located in Thornhill, Ontario since 1992.

* Riverside Golf & Country Club

Re-construction of the 9th green along with the remodelling of several bunkers and the 18th fairway were completed in September. Riverside is a beautifully undulating golf course set high above the Saskatchewan River. Golf Architect William Kinnear unveiled his wonderful design in 1912. Carrick Design has provided design services to Riverside Golf & Country Club, located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan since 2007.
