How do you approach the renovation of a nearly 80-year-old golf course that has been given, “very little attention over its history?” That is the challenge facing John Colligan, ASGCA, and Colligan Golf Design as he renovates Rockwood Golf Course in Fort Worth, Texas.

Colligan spoke about the project to “Golf Course Archtiecture.”

“Rockwood is a 1938 John Bredemus design along the banks of the Trinity River in Fort Worth,” Colligan said. “The course is located in the Northside area of town which is within five minutes of the Central Business District.”

Colligan said that it is his intent to use the elements of Bredemus’ original design while at the same time addressing the changes that have taken place in the game of golf itself, and how this affects how the course is played.

“The changes will include the rerouting of 12 holes,” Colligan confirmed. “This is to take advantage of the topography and vegetative features the property has to offer.”

The contractor for the project will be Houston-based Heritage Links.

Construction is scheduled to get underway November 2015 and is the course is likely to reopen in October 2016.
